For Saint George’s Day, The Lanesborough Brings Afternoon Tea to the NHS

The Lanesborough x Peggy Porschen Afternoon Tea was unfortunately cut short due to closures related to COVID-19, but the collaboration has been revived for Saint George’s Day to serve the NHS staff at St George’s Hospital in London.

The Lanesborough’s pastry chefs and a team of volunteers from the hotel have prepared 200 afternoon teas that are being delivered to St George’s Hospital and distributed to 40 different wards for the enjoyment of the hospital staff. Each afternoon tea has been packed with care in The Lanesborough x Peggy Porschen Afternoon Tea packaging and includes 5 pastries (Peggy’s Pink Pavlova, Lemon & Elderflower Tartlet, Chocolate heaven cupcake, strawberry & champagne cupcake, Lemon, Raspberry and rose layer cake) 4 finger sandwiches (Egg & Cress Mayonnaise, Mint Yoghurt & cucumber, Coronation Chicken, Cheddar Cheese & Pickle) and traditional plain & raisin scones with strawberry jam.

The hospital has organised a virtual raffle to raise money for the St George’s Coronavirus Appeal, to which The Lanesborough has donated a complimentary stay including breakfast and dinner at Michelin starred Céleste. Peggy Porschen will donate a box of seasonal cupcakes and a goodie bag to be placed in the raffle winner’s room during their stay.

Oetker Collection is committed to supporting our local communities during this challenging time and St George’s Hospital has special significance for The Lanesborough. The hospital—now located in Tooting, southwest London—was originally opened in the original Lanesborough House (home of the viscounts Lanesborough) on Hyde Park Corner in 1733. The home fell into disrepair in the early 19thcentury and was demolished and rebuilt into a 350-bed facility by architect William Watkins. The hospital reopened in the early 1840s and was operational on the premises until the 1970s, when it relocated to Tooting and the property was refurbished into The Lanesborough London.

Today, St George’s Hospital has an NHS staff of over 9,000 members and is one of the UK’s principal teaching hospitals, training medical students from University of London. Serving a population of 1.3 million residents across southwest London, St George’s is a leader in the nation’s fight against COVID-19. The Lanesborough, along with our partners at Peggy Porschen, are honoured to support London’s NHS front-line workers. We thank them for their tireless efforts in the best way we can at the moment, with the comparatively small contribution of afternoon tea for St George’s Day.
