St Barths with the Kids: Interview with Marc Moerman, Eden Rock Villa Rental Butler

Eden Rock Villa Rental’s light-hearted butler, Marc, loves helping families make the most of their St Barths holiday. A father himself, he knows all of the best-kept secrets for family fun on the island. We asked Marc to fill us in on a few…

St Barths delights its guests with countless beaches. What is the best beach for fun with kids, and why?

I would recommend Shell beach for snorkelling in the crystal clear water and jumping off the cliffs in safety. At the end the day, the sunset over the water is perfect. Colombier beach is accessed by a beautiful walking trail and is one of the best places to spend the day with the family and share a picnic. And then of course, the Eden Rock Beach for its tranquillity, service and for the many beach toys available for kids.

The island offers an impressive range of activities, but they aren’t all appropriate for children. Can you name three activities that are exclusively made for little ones?

To start, our not-to-be-missed pastry-making workshop with the Eden Rock Pastry Chef Cassandre Verdier is designed just for kids. The island also offers a large range of nautical activities including surfing sessions, optimist boats, and scuba diving for the whole family. And during the summer, St Barths’ local art school proposes workshops with local artists and professionals.

St Barths is all about the French art de vivre and gastronomy. What is the best restaurant on the island to introduce children to fine French food?

The local art parties and markets are a playful way to taste and discover both French and Caribbean food. Children really enjoy the many different stands and the music, sculpture and photography.

Additionally, Le Papillon Ivre offers an authentic French bistro cuisine with fresh products and a creative twist with flavours to please children and their parents.

What are the three best ERVR villas fit for a family with kids?

. Villa June: Without mentioning the fabulous infinity pool, I would choose this villa for the nearby Corossol beach, its two adjoined bedrooms, the private cinema room, the foosball table and backgammon tables… Kids and parents never get bored here.

. Villa Casa Del Mar: For its natural green spaces where turtles, small goats and rosters can be seen in their natural habitat. There is plenty of room for large families.

. Villa Sand Club: For its specially designed kids’ room (with single beds) and adjoining nanny’s or parent’s bedroom. This villa has direct access to the Flamands beach.

If you had to advise guests travelling to St Barths on how to pack for their children, what should they not forget?

At least one swimsuit, obviously, as well as sneakers or walking shoes for teenagers. Sunscreen and sunglasses of course! And then a pair of flip-flops and a cap. Ready to go!

Why are you so enthusiastic working for families with children?

As a father myself, I know how much joy children bring to families. It is always a pleasure for me to see a family united and experiencing the best of St Barths together. When children are happy, parents are too and helping to satisfy everyone is meaningful and gratifying to me.

What is the best place to capture the perfect family portrait on St Barths?

Petit Cul de Sac’s natural pools are by far the best place. A view from above with the family floating like sea stars in the turquoise water, and jumping from the cliffs holding hands are two great shots.

According to you, what is the best souvenir to bring back from St Barths as a family?

A picture with your favourite butler and the most beautiful Caribbean sunset.
