Paleo: The Perfect Travel Diet?

Eating healthily whilst travelling can be a challenge– especially if you’re a foodie. But there are simple and satisfying ways to eat wisely on-the-go. One of our favourites is the Paleo diet.

In essence, the Paleo diet is about eating only the foods and ingredients that were available to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. That means that—regrettably—dairy products and bread are out, but meats, fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and nuts are most certainly in. It can seem daunting at first to deprive oneself of the cheese platter, but the benefits easily outweigh the costs.

When you’re travelling and dining out for most meals, eating Paleo can help to stabilise your blood sugar, allowing you to bounce back much quicker from any jet lag or general travel fatigue you may experience. The diet’s permitted vegetables, fruits and nuts reduce inflammation and eliminate toxins in the body, which decreases your risk of getting sick– always a plus when you’re travelling for business!

Finding Paleo friendly restaurant food can be easier in some cultures than others, but the diet is flexible enough that you can usually tweak at least one menu item to fit. You may have to discard a bun or request that the chef hold the cream sauce, but, in our experience, most nice establishments are happy to accommodate.

A tiny disclaimer: Paleo can be tricky for vegetarians because meat figures heavily into the diet, but vegetarians who try it will enjoy similar benefits to meat-eaters. The Paleo diet is essentially a clean eating method that helps keep you healthy, energetic and in a good mood.
