Artist-in-residence at Brenners: Thilo Westermann

At Brenners Park-Hotel & Spa and Villa Stéphanie, we love contrasting the 145-year history of our properties with fresh perspectives by hosting and collaborating with leading contemporary artists. This year, we were delighted to welcome German artist Thilo Westermann. Hailing from Berlin, Westermann is best known for creating floral still life images through a manual process called reverse glass painting.

Westermann creates his magnificent paintings by blackening the rear side of a sheet of glass with paint and then gently etching his design out of tiny dots using a fine-pointed needle. The work is so miniscule that the eye confuses the darker grey areas with shading, making the flower petals appear to pop out in 3D. Once complete, Westermann scans the glass paintings and prints them at a scale six times larger than the original to magnify the minute detailing. Fashion label Escada collaborated with the artist on a capsule collection called Escada Meets Thilo Westermannfor Spring/Summer 2015, translating Westermann’s floral works into a motif for dresses and gowns.

During his stay with us, Westermann gathered inspiration from the hotel’s history and the grandeur of Baden-Baden to create a limited-edition print titled Vanitas (Redoute) (2). This stunning floral work is sold exclusively at the Brenners Eden Being Boutique and makes an original gift for the art and design lover in your life.
