Markus Del Monego was born on the 11th of April 1966 in Basel in Switzerland. He completed his Abitur (school-leaving examination) in 1985 at Kant Grammar School in Weil am Rhein in Germany. After this, he started his training as a hotel professional, which he successfully completed in 1988 at the Dorint Spa Hotel in Bad Brückenau.
Immediately after this he studied to become a sommelier at the Four Seasons Hotel in Hamburg. Markus Del Monego was head sommelier at the Park Hotel Bremen until 1991. A number of different roles followed as banqueting manager and restaurant and hotel manager in Germany and abroad.
His passion for wine had already shaped his career. He had achieved considerable success in important national and international competitions from early on.
He had already achieved 8th place in a Sopexa competition for the best German sommelier for French wines and spirits in 1986. Just one year later he was already the best trainee sommelier in Germany.
Two years later in the European brands scholarship Markus Del Monego became the best sommelier in Germany and also gained the Ruinart trophy best German sommelier. He achieved first place at the competition for best German sommelier for French wines and spirits in 1991. He then achieved a creditable third place at the Sopexa competition ‘Meilleur sommelier du monde’ and three years later he achieved fourth place at the sommelier world championship in Tokyo.
In 1998 Markus Del Monego became the first and so far only German sommelier world champion in Vienna and just a few months later ‘master of sake – kiki sakeshi’ in Japan. One year later he was awarded the distinction of ‘ambassador of Swiss wines’.
Markus Del Monego is currently owner and general manager of the service and consulting company, caveCo GmbH in Essen, specialised in organoleptic quality control of wines and spirits. He is also owner and general manager of the company tasteTainment GmbH in Essen, which organises seminars and presentations in the field of wine. At the chamber of commerce in Essen, he is sworn expert for the evaluation of wines.
In addition to his activities in business and evaluation, he writes for one of Germany´s biggest newspapers Süddeutsche Zeitung as well as for different international magazines such as Vsya Europe, Lufthansa Exclusive.
In a private area of The Garden Room, you will have the pleasure of starting this evening with a glass of champagne and an excellent cigar, a Cohiba Siglo II. What to enjoy your taste buds before going to dinner and discover a meal of four dishes prepared by the starred chef Florian Favario. This meal will be an opportunity to discover excellent wines.
Then you will be invited to retire to the Garden Room to explore the world of Cognac and cigars with a tasting of Cognac Lhéraud XO Charles VII, Cognac Hennessy Paradis accompanied by a Ramon Allones and finally a Hine of 1935 and a Croizet of 1914, sublimated by a bewitching Vegas Robaina.
